Vaucluse
Residential Sydney, New South Wales • Completed 2023-2024A refined, grand and elegant family home.
The owners were deciding between moving to the country or a larger house by Sydney harbour. Landing on the later, Sophie was asked to create a practical and liveable family home in the heart of Vaucluse. A homely and enduring house inspired by Leslie Wilkinson. Not a beach house. Classic, cool and timeless.
Architects, Weir Phillips and the owners were in the midst of creating a beautiful Palm Beach, Florida inspired home, but the interiors required more focused attention. SD began by analysing the context of the house and took inspiration from its subtropical setting, proximity to the water, and private position. The result demonstrates a dialogue between architecture and inhabitant. The interiors tell the story of a family well-travelled and stylish. It feels quietly confident and worldly. East meets West in a palette that feels both curated and lived-in. Bohemian spirit tempers classical restraint, European detailing meets with echoes of Palm Beach ease and British colonial grace. All of it grounded by an Australian sense of lightness and warmth. The result is grand but not ostentatious.
